Matthew Mitchell Houston TX Obituary: Authorities in Houston are investigating the deaths of four members of a family found inside a home in the River Oaks neighbourhood, in what police believe may be a murder-suicide.
Officers were called to a property on Kingston Street shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Monday after a babysitter raised concerns about not being able to contact the family since the previous evening. According to police, officers forced entry into the home, where they discovered the bodies of two adults and two young children.
Although officials have not formally released the identities of those involved, property records from the Harris County Appraisal District indicate the home is owned by Matthew Mitchell and Thy Mitchell, a couple known for co-owning the popular Traveler’s Table in the Montrose area.
Police said the victims included a 52-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, an eight-year-old girl, and a four-year-old boy. All four were found with gunshot wounds. Preliminary findings suggest that the man shot the three other victims before taking his own life, though investigators emphasised that inquiries are ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached.
The deaths have sent shockwaves through both the local community and Houston’s hospitality industry, where the Mitchells were widely recognised for their work. Traveler’s Table had gained a strong reputation for its globally inspired cuisine and was considered a notable fixture in the city’s dining scene.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and police say they are continuing to examine evidence and gather information to better understand the circumstances leading up to the incident. Detectives from the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division are leading the investigation.
In a brief response, representatives associated with the Mitchells’ business said the restaurants would remain open but noted that the family would not be issuing a public statement at this time. Staff at the establishment declined to comment when approached.
Police have appealed to anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
