John Goeken Accident Urbana-Champaign IL Obituary: A 39-year-old man from Savoy has been identified as the motorcyclist who died following a multi-vehicle crash in Urbana, Illinois, authorities have confirmed.
John K. Goeken was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m. on Saturday in the emergency department of Carle Foundation Hospital, according to Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer. Officials said a post-mortem examination has been scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.
The crash occurred in the 2300 block of South Lincoln Avenue, a busy thoroughfare in Urbana, at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Emergency responders, including officers from the University of Illinois Police Department, arrived at the scene to find a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle with visible damage, indicating a significant impact.
Initial reports suggested that the motorcyclist had sustained critical injuries. He was transported to hospital, where medical personnel attempted to stabilise him. However, despite these efforts, he later died from his injuries. Authorities confirmed his death in an update issued on Monday afternoon.
The driver of the SUV involved in the collision was also taken to a nearby hospital. Police said the individual’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, though no further details about their condition have been released.
The incident prompted the temporary closure of southbound lanes of South Lincoln Avenue between Windsor Road and St. Mary’s Road. The closure, which lasted several hours, allowed investigators to examine the scene and gather evidence, while also ensuring the safety of other road users.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear. Investigators from the coroner’s office, the University of Illinois Police Department, and the Illinois State Police are working jointly to determine the factors involved. These may include road conditions, vehicle speeds, and whether any other contributing elements played a role.
Authorities have not yet said if any charges will be filed. Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to come forward as inquiries continue.
